พืชกัญชา เป็นพืชให้ดอกอยู่ในตระกูล Cannabaceae ต้นก าเนิดอยู่แถบเอเชียกลาง และกระจายปลูกใน หลายๆ ส่วนของโลก กัญชา เรียกกันโดยทั่วไปว่า cannabis, Marijuana, Ganja หรือบางครั้งก็เรียกว่า Indian Hemp กัญชามีชื่อวิทยาศาสตร์ว่า Cannabis sativa L. subsp. indica กัญชา เป็นพืชที่มีต้นตัวผู้ และต้นตัวเมีย
แยกกัน (dioecious plant) พืชกัญชามีสารส าคัญคือ สารแคนนาบินอยด์(cannabinoids) มากกว่า 100 ตัว โดยมีสารเตตร้าไฮโดรแคนนาบินอล (Tetrahydrocannabinol-THC) เป็นสารส าคัญ ซึ่งให้ผลที่ท าให้เกิดการกระตุ้นประสาท ปริมาณสาร THC มีมากหรือน้อยและผลการกระตุ้นประสาทของพืชกัญชาขึ้นกับสภาพแวดล้อมของพื้น ทีที่ปลูก สายพันธุ์ วิธีการปลูกและส่วนของต้นกัญชาที่น ามาใช้ ทั้งนี้ส่วนของต้นกัญชาที่มีสารดังกล่าวมากที่สุด คือ ช่อดอก (flower heads) และใบ (leaves)
